MVP Scope Document Template (With a Real Example)

By Audrey Graham3 min read
Short answer

A good MVP scope document fits on one page. It names the one user, the one outcome, the steps to get there, what is out of scope, how success will be measured and the price and timeline. If it takes more than a page, the MVP is too big.

Two people can read the same feature list and picture completely different products. That gap is where blown budgets, missed deadlines and arguments with your developer begin.

A one-page scope document closes it before any code is written. Below is the exact template I use with every client, plus a filled-in example you can copy for your own product.

The template

1. Who is the first user? One role, described specifically.

2. What result do they get? One sentence in their words.

3. The path. The numbered steps the user takes to get that result.

4. In scope. Screens, workflows, AI features, integrations and data included in this build.

5. Out of scope (v2 list). Everything discussed that is not in this build.

6. Success looks like. What has to be true at launch, and what you will measure in the first month.

7. Price, milestones and timeline. The fixed price, when each payment is due and what you will see at each milestone.

8. Ownership. Whose GitHub, hosting and API accounts are used.

A filled-in example

First user: A commercial estimator at a small steel fabrication shop.

Result: "I uploaded the drawings and had a material list to price within the hour."

The path:

  1. Estimator signs in.
  2. Uploads a set of PDF drawings for one job.
  3. The AI extracts member sizes and quantities.
  4. Estimator reviews and corrects the list.
  5. Exports the list as a CSV for their pricing spreadsheet.

In scope: Email sign-in, PDF upload up to a set page count, AI extraction, review and correct screen, CSV export, error tracking, production hosting.

Out of scope: Team accounts, pricing inside the app, accounting integrations, mobile app, custom reports.

Success: Three estimators complete a real job with it during the first month, and they say it saved them time even after corrections.

Price and timeline: Fixed price, four weeks, paid 40% / 30% / 30%.

Ownership: The client's GitHub, hosting and AI provider accounts from day one.

Tips for writing yours

  • Use your customer's words, not technical terms.
  • If two people read it and picture different products, it is not specific enough yet.
  • Put the out-of-scope list in writing. It prevents most arguments later.

Frequently asked questions

How detailed should an MVP scope document be?

Detailed enough that two people would picture the same product, and short enough to fit on one page.

Who should write the MVP scope document?

The founder and the builder together. The founder owns the "who" and "why," and the builder sizes the "what."

Do I need wireframes in my scope document?

Rough sketches help, but they are optional. The written path matters more than how each screen looks.
